What is Community Access?
Community Access support helps participants get out into the community and take part in activities that matter to them — whether that's a fitness class, an art group, volunteering, or simply having someone alongside them at the shops or a local event. For many participants, it's as much about building confidence and social skills as it is about the activity itself.
Support can be delivered one-on-one, tailored entirely to an individual's interests and pace, or through group programs where participants build friendships alongside peers with shared interests. Both formats are funded under the NDIS, and many participants use a mix of both.
As an example: a participant might want to join a local art class but feel unsure about going alone, or need help figuring out transport, timing and what to bring. Community Access support handles that groundwork — so the barrier isn't the logistics, it's just whether the participant wants to go.
Common challenges we help resolve
Most participants come to Community Access because getting out into the community has become harder than it should be. These are the situations we see most often in South East Melbourne:
- Feeling isolated at home with few chances to socialise
- Wanting to try a group activity but not knowing where to start
- Needing a consistent support worker before trying something new feels possible
- Past attempts at community programs that weren't actually inclusive
- Transport being the real barrier, not the activity itself
- Wanting to build independence gradually rather than all at once
One-on-one or group — what fits better?
Both formats are funded the same way under the NDIS. Which one fits depends on your goals, confidence level and what you're trying to build toward.
| Format | What it looks like | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| One-on-one outings | A dedicated support worker accompanies you individually to an activity, event or errand of your choice. | Participants wanting a flexible, fully personalised pace. |
| Group programs | Structured sessions with other participants, run at a set time and location in South East Melbourne. | Participants wanting to build friendships and social skills alongside peers. |
| A mix of both | Group programs for regular social contact, plus 1:1 outings for specific interests or appointments. | Most participants, once their plan is established. |
